We guess it's just a So-Cal kind of week [Ty, Splinters, now Beaters... yeesh] Anyways, Beaters are from San Diego, where lo-fi runs like rivers and the punks spring up like wildflowers. They've got one release to their namesake right now, the Fishage 7" on Single Screen Records/Volar Records [Craig from Xmas Island's label], but they've got a whole handful of others chalked up for the near future [Including another 7" on Zoo Music <-- run by a Dum Dum Girl and a Crocodile, a new cassette, and a CDR comp.] We haven't heard word of a tour anytime soon, but we're a-hoping and a-wishing and a-thinking a-bout it.

Ladies, we started writing our review for last night's Bruce Springsteen show and after reading it a couple times we realized that it was riddled with personal sentiments to our childhood and how we should probably just call our moms and thank them everyday for raising us on The Boss. It also made us realize that there's really not a reason to review the show last night. You know it was a great show. You know Bruce crowd-surfed and belted out Born To Run and took our "Merry Christmas Boss" sign and played "Santa Clause Is Coming to Town". You know Tyler Glaser was there. And you know all the blue-collared Gods were dancing in the streets. So let's leave it at that, right? Right.

And mom, thanks a ton. There's no one else we'd rather be in the front row with [3 times]

The Weakends are from Atlanta, GA. Just kidding! They're from France, but from listening to them you'd definitely think they could be an Atlanta band. In fact, our buddy Hondo from Atlanta was the one that directed our attention to the French beaus. Let's put all the Black Lip comparisons in our pockets and just say that The Weakends do a great job of producing loud, catchy, 60s-garagey, sing-a-long-y, sorta punky, kind of Black Lips-y, kind of Demon's Claws-y jams. I guess the Black Lips comparison slipped out. Whatever. Their debut LP was released earlier this year on Rob's House [along with a 7"] and it'll stay on your table for weeks. Not your kitchen table, your turntable. No word as to when the boys will return stateside for another tour, but hopefully sooner than later.

Aside from being the best new place to catch all-ages shows in Murfreesboro, YEAH! is also the best new place for kids to hangout and be creative and super artsy-fartsy and stuff. Before you get super stoked about a band who's logo is a burger with shades, we need to go ahead and tell you that Traditional Fools don't play no mo'. This is one of Ty Segall's old bands out on the West Coast that, along with everything else Ty touches, is gold. They've had a couple of releases: an LP on Wizard Mountain, cassette on Burger Records, some live bootlegs, blah blah blah. They're a little hard to find, but make the extra effort. Trust us. Are we allowed to do this? Should we be telling you guys about bands that don't play shows anymore? I mean, if we're doing that, we might as well talk about James Gang or The Move or something, right? OK, this is the last defunct-band post we will make [probably. Not gonna promise anything.]

Oh, you babies are too nice. Our friend Cooper out in Murfreesboro went and sent us some mail reviewing Sunday night's Looking Glass // Kindergarten Circus // Cheap Time show and we wanted to go ahead and share it with you. Maybe a regular contributor on our hands? Or atleast Nashville's Dead's ambassador to Murfreesboro? Yeah. And our bebe, Olivia Throckmorton, snapped some pics for us. Check them out after the letter.

Dear Nashville's Dead,

Whoa baby! Sunday night was a good night to be in Murfreesboro. When I heard The Looking Glass, Kindergarten Circus, and Cheap Time were playing at YEAH, I knew somebody somewhere had done a good thing.

Anyways, I got there right before The Looking Glass started their set. Those kids play some sweet 60s psych-garage jams, and they look the part too. It wasn't long before my feet were tappin' and my hands were clappin'. I talked to the boys after their set and they said they're working on a cassette right now that should be out soon. Can't wait for that!

After them, The Kindergarten Circus set up shop and, as always, they kicked out the gems. Dillon and the bad boys harnessed their teenage angst [or hormones?] and churned through song after song, mostly sampling from their debut LP. I went upstairs for a little while to play pool because I'm still a little sour about Dillon sticking his finger in my mashed potatoes the other day, but you should definitely check them out tomorrow night if you're not going to see The Boss.

Glam-bam-thank you ma'am-ers, Cheap Time, totally exceeded my expectations. And those were some HIGH expectations. This was the last show of a month-and-a-half long tour, so they were super tight. Novak and Steven blazed through their set, playing pretty much the entirety of their first LP and a handful of new songs ["Down the Tube" is THE JAM] I talked to Jeffrey after the show, and apparently that month-and-a-half tour included a pit stop to record the next LP! Stoked? Duh.

So last week our buddies Arish and Mark [King Khan & BBQ] came to town with our lovely lady-friends Those Darlins. Rocking that hard should be against the law. Maybe it is? Just kidding, Kristin. Anyways, it was a great show from both bands. Those Darlins opened up the night and totally blew everyone away with a cover of "Lonesome Cowboy Bill" and the hits just kept rolling. Pretty much the perfect setup for a King Khan & BBQ Show show. The two, along with tour buddy Leo manning the keys, took the stage and killed it. Played all the jams. All of 'em. New ones. Old ones. Oh, hey, the Splinters are just a group of 4 baby-ladies that love to rock in Oakland. That's a lie. They're way more than just 4 lovely ladies rockin' on the ones and twos. We just meant to say that their not anything totally groundbreaking. Which isn't a bad thing at all. When your songs sound like the best of the 90s riot grrrl, shangri-las-y, fuzzy-punky jams, how can you complain? They put out a 7" on Double Negative for their song "Splintered Bridges" earlier this year and it blew us away [we've got one of the 40 hand-painted covers, suck it nerds.] If you ask us, you guys can keep your Vivy Gals, we'll take the Splinters. No word as to when we can expect any other releases, but hopefully sooner than later. Aquarrius thinks they should do a split with Brilliant Colors, we can't say we disagree.

This almost totally slipped our minds, but when we were doing The Rundown yesterday we remembered that Blues Control are coming to town Saturday night to play at Dino's [or Betty's?] Blues Control [who just put out a new LP, Local Flavor, on Siltbreeze and have other releases from Holy Mountain and Fusetron] are a duo from Queens who have a walkman for a drummer, use keyboards, tapes, a four-string Cort electric guitar, and effects to make all those beautiful sounds. Cool, right? They're hitting Nashville on Saturday with the Cherry Blossoms and Ttotals, which is a fucking great bill. We know there's that other big show going on over at Little Hamilton [that we'll talk about later] but this is really a show to not miss. Here's a video and little Blues Control sample for ya...

GUTSIES

Gutsies is a good name for a band. They're a Brooklyn band featuring our good buddy Jacob [He drums for The Beets, but he plays guitar and sings in this band. Talented, yes? Yes.] Gutsies don't get to play too many shows since The Beets are all the hooplah in NYC these days, but seeing them live is great. They load their guns with straight pop rock jams and they aim to kill. And they're sure shots. Bullseye. As of right now, they're yet to have any official releases, but we know they've got plans to put something out on Captured Tracks in the near future. Be on the lookout for it and love them with your hearts.

The sleaziest sleaze on the seven seas. Exactly. This Minneapolis punk band is one of the few bands we can think of who's name is the only word that perfectly describes their music. So, if you're not into fast, loud, snotty rock and roll, go ahead and skip this one. At first listen you'd probably think, "This has to be on the wrong speed. Let me try it on 33rpm. Oh shit, I guess it is supposed to be on 45rpm. Whoa." Conor's vocals are high-pitched and repetitive, but in the best way. As far as we know, they've only one got official release to their name [The Somkin' Fuckin' Cigs Single pictured above, available on Fashionable Idiots] and good luck finding it anywhere around here. We were lucky enough to pick it up in Chicago back in the Spring. The boys did a short tour earlier this year [Neglecting the southern states. C'mon guys, we'd throw the best show for you.] But they don't often leave the Great Lake area. Yeah. Sleazy.

Because the cure to a bad Monday is killer vintage finds along with some girl-rock. FOR FREE. The girl on the flyer up there looks like she found a REAL party dress, but we don't really condone that kind of thing. You know, keep it a mystery for us, it makes us want it more. Let's Party! We love Friday the 13th. Lots. So, to celebrate, we're going to tell you about 13 sort of Nashville-related things we're stoked for. Sound good? Wrong. It doesn't sound "good", it sounds great!

This weekend. We're stoked for this weekend because of the Symptoms release show, the Daniel Pujol/Spandy Candles house show, and for the Cheap Time / Looking Glass / Kindergarten Circus show at YEAH! All the info for those shows can be found in early posts. Check them out.
Fall in Nashville. We're right in the prime-time for Nashville's Fall season. All the trees look pretty, the breezes are breezy.... Who wants to go to the Parthenon?
Bruce Springsteen and John Fogerty. The Boss & Co. are coming to town next Wednesday and John Fogerty is back here on Sunday. This in itself could probably cover numbers 1 - 13, but that just wouldn't be fair to you, would it? Also, has anyone seen that clip from the Hall of Fame show at MSG where Bruce and John are playing TOGETHER? Makes you wanna cry.
Burn to Shine: Atlanta. We don't know when/if this is ever going to come out, but we're huge fans of the Trixie DVD series. And with a lineup of artists as bad as that [Black Lips, Mastadon, ANDPW, Carbonas, etc.] we just can't wait to watch.
Michael Jackson. He'll never die.
Night People. One of our favorite labels right now has got a bunch of upcoming releases. Including stuff from Tyvek, The Polyps, Taterbug, The Twerps, and lots of other great bands. Go here and check them out.
Bad Sports LP. Our babies down in Denton, TX are putting their debut LP out next week on Douchemaster Records. If it's anything like the cassette and couple of 7"s they dropped us back in August, we'll be stoked. Someone told us it sounds kind of like Jawbreaker's first LP.
Our next 2 radio shows. Seeing as how these next 2 shows could very well be our last at WRVU, we're gonna really kick out some jams and blast the waves to bits. Be sure to tune in on Thursday from 4-5PM.
Older music. We can't stop listening to James Gang, R Stevie Moore, Todd Rundgren, Abner Jay, The Weeds, Smoke, Primitives, blah blah blah blah blah. This 13 thing is kind of hard so we're stretching now. Sorry.
SAFG. Those boys have got some real big stuff stewin' in their crock-pots. More specifically, a BIG show Nov. 28 at Little Hamilton that we'll tell you all about next week.

King Tuff's Was Dead [Originally out on Vegetable Records but got a wider release from Colonel Records] was the best album to come out last year [suck it, Fleet Foxes] And you're probably already kind of aware of King Tuff, or atleast one of Kyle Thomas's projects [Witch, Happy Birthday, Feathers] We looked into King Tuff a while ago when our ATL buddy Gentleman Jesse did a cover of the song "Connection" for his Whirlyball 7", and we haven't looked back since. It's just like these 70s-glammy-psychedelic-rock jams drenched in honey: it's so sweet and great and it sticks with you forever. But you don't mind it sticking all over you. And his songs just hit you right in your pop-vulnerable pressure points right away, not giving you a chance to not like it. And, osh-kosh-my gosh, we could listen to that guitar all day. Seriously guys, if you aren't listening to this on the daily, get on it. Pick up Was Dead here.

If we've said it once, we've said it probably more than once: Daniel Pujol is a hard-working dude. In our list of Hardest Working Nashvillians, he's definitely in the top 5. He's got his cassette release tonight [we'll post about that again later] two more house shows lined up in the next week, couple more shows on top of that, recording for a 7", and getting ready for another tour [And he's been writing up some gems for us, you'll see soon.] Oh, and he's in grad school right now?! Geez. Anyways, here's some info about a couple other shows he's playing coming up. This Saturday at The Willow with Spandy Candies and a couple touring bands and then Monday night at the Rabbit Hole with Looks Like a Snake [one of the most underrated local bands, those guys rule], TV Torso, and Darwin Deez. How's that grab ya?

We can't remember if we've ever mentioned these guys on here before, but if you've ever been around us for an extended period of time we've probably told you about Liquor Store. It's our buddy Sarim's band up in New Jersey. We used to catch them on the reg back when we were in the New York groove, and they even hit Nashville over the summer with Mahonies, Wieners, and JTB [one of the best shows we saw this summer] at the Springwater. Who's ready for some counting? That's six guitars up there. SIX! Oh my god these dudes shred so hard. Nothing's currently available for purchase, but just bookmark their myspace and listen to them on the daily. That's what we do. Our baby-girl, PopJew [who's crushing on Natty Child pretty hard] loves them, too. Not only does Liquor Store really kickass with their songs, but they're the most entertaining funniest band we've ever seen. And we've seen funny bands. Plans for the boys are to maybe visit the city in January, we'll keep you posted. Here's a video of them playing their #1 Hit Single "Trash Sandwich" at Bamalama Fest.

Some people would describe Liquor Store's live show as a religious experience. Let's leave the religious experiences to Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Ok? Liquor Store's show is more like the absolute absence of a religious experience. Tears your fuckin' heart out, girl. Yo-Ster pretty much sums them up here.

MAGIC AND THE JOHNSONS

This all-star duo is from Orlando, FL and they've quickly become one of our favorite rock and roll tag-teams. Tim and Sam [arms above] shell out simple, raw, almost-kind-of-stupid punk jams. Because of the name of the band and the names of the songs [ "Friends Mistaken for Brothers" or "She Left Me for God" are both candidates for best trackname this year] you'd probably think this band is a joke. And you'd be kind of right. But also wrong. I mean, in a time where everything is over-produced and kids think that Miley Cyrus's "Party in the USA" is better than Jonathan Richman's "Parties in the USA", we just need something that we can listen to and hear that makes us think "Fuck that". So, I guess for us, listening to Magic and the Johnsons is like saying "Fuck you" to Miley and the Jo-Bros and all the mickey-moused bologna. Plus, we just really like it. Unfortuanately, M&TheJ's are now on hiatus because Tim is in the Air Force. Here's some photos from their last show from super rad Florida zine Kickbright. Sam's in another band called The Shreds and they are planning to go on tour in the early nether-parts of next year with St. Dad. Nashville. Yes?

Word on the street is that Aerosmith are finally calling it quits! We typically don't like to bash on bands or mention bands that we're not big fans of around here, but we're pretty stoked at the idea of Aerosmith not being around anymore. Rumor is that Steve-y babe quit the band to pursue some solo stuff. We'll ring Liv up and get all the details tomorrow. As for now, we go out and celebrate the thought of it.

What's the deal? Is Glenn Danzig's House the new place to do release shows or something? I mean, we don't mind, we were just curious. Anyways, your favorite Nashville punks, Symptoms, are releasing a new 12" and their having a big show on Saturday to celebrate. It's limited to only 150 copies and you can definitely expect them to sell out QUICK. From what we've heard, we can say that the 12" has easily become one of our favorite new releases. If that's not reason enough to come to the show, check out the rest of that bill! Cheap Time, who've been on tour for the last bit, are making their way back from the West Coast and will be in town to spray some glammy gems along with the Heavy Creamers and Cy Barkley to top it off. Check out who's got a new 7" slated for later this month. The dream-creamers are pressing a new single for Infinity Cat [We don't know which songs are going to be on it yet. We're pulling for "Watusi" that song rules] Word on the street is that it'll be limited to 100 copies. Which means you'd better be on the look and have some dollars in your hand because this will probably be gone real quick. Real quick. Cream Team has a show scheduled for Nov. 28th at The Springwater with JTB and Natural Child, maybe it'll be ready then? We'll keep you posted.

Speaking of pressing records, JEFF just sent Heavy Days in for a second pressing. When it comes back this time it'll have a DIFFERENT back cover! Man, I already had to buy three copies of the first pressing [black, yellow, and mixed] but now I'm gonna have to buy one from the second pressing too. Whatevers. My grandkids will go ga-ga for it one day.

A little bit of Ben Steine's Money

Last Friday wasn't Halloween, but it might as well have been. The show at Glenn Danzig's House was one of the most fun things we've been to in a.... I was going to say "in a long time" but there have been some really fun shows lately. I guess we'll just say that this show is just proof that the shows are getting more and more fun each time. Right? Well, the show featured 4 virtual unknowns [Ben Steine's Money, The Crumbs, So Jazzy, and Glenn Danzig's Band] along with Natural Child. All the bands were good. Really good. By the end of the night, Glenn Danzig's House looked like it had been hit by a bomb. King Khan and BBQ [Mark Sultan] are coming back to town a week from tomorrow [Nov. 11] to play at Exit/In with those hometown girly-babes Those Darlins. The last time KK+BBQ passed through our little Nashville, they rocked to a pretty sparse crowd, but then King Khan & His Shrines passed through a few months later and packed the place out. We still can't really figure out why [We like 'em bolth, but KK+BBQ is for sure our favorite of the two. But we do like the bolth of them. Bolths of them] The two-piece's new album, Invisible Girl [VICE], just came out today and like all their other releases, we can't help but shake when we hear it. There's lots of Spits-y jams [specifically "Tastebuds", which might be one of the grossest most rad songs we've heard this year] and some real crooning heart-breakers on here [Like "Invisible Girl" below] Rock and roll styl-ee. Be sure to catch both of these bands when they come to town next week [And bring some baked goods to welcome the Darlins home, you know they deserve it]

Last Thursday our baby Atlanta boys rolled into town and, as always, they blew it up. The show was originally supposed to just be Turbo Fruits and Black Lips, but the fellas requested that Natural Child open the show [Which was totally fine by us] The Halloween in the air must have infiltrated the babes because they definitely shelled out a few treats, playing classics like "Stone Cold", "Make It", and a Weeds [The Lollipop Shoppe] cover of "You Must Be a Witch". Since it's release, Turbo Fruits' latest record Echo Kid has been making some waves across the nation. And after touring with Monotonix, CMJ-ing all over the place, and hitting home with Black Lips last week, they've been able to cover alot of ground with new crowds and babies. They've got a new video directed by Brad Holland [Busy guy, amiright?] for their song "Naked With You" that's pretty great [Dazed Digital has the exclusive. Thanks, Turbo Fruits, I thought we were friends?] But since we can't embed that digital video baby right here on our spot, we'll share a couple others of the boys getting hotboxed in a bathroom.

We mentioned this yesterday, but we figured we should elaborate further since there are SO many new bands playing the show. Natural Child just got back from their first tour [which ruled] and played with Black Lips last night, but tonight is their official release show for their debut 7" [Out on Infinity Cat Records] You probably knew most of that, though. Here's the low on all the other bands playing tonight:

BEN STEINE'S MONEY:

Two bad boys at heart trying to buy their way into the rock and roll world. Expect them to accomplish that goal by the end of the year. While one jams out the licks on his guitar, the other sings about high school, teenage frustrations, hot dogs.... yeah, hot dogs. They played an impromptu show in Murfreesboro a while back, so feel lucky you're getting the heads up on their performance tonight.

THE CRUMBS:

Another two-piece rock and roll troupe featuring members of JEFF and Heavy Cream. From what we can tell, these babies love their food. And their rock and roll. This is their debut show and is sure to be a treat. Don't miss it.

SO JAZZY:

So Jazzy is a rag-tag group of teenage babies fleshing out short, sweet, chuggy jams. This is their first show too. Ready for some math? Think ESG+Beach Boys+fuzz+no one really knows what they're doing. That's kind of what it's like.

THE GLENN DANZIGS:

I don't know how they did it, but somehow they managed to get THE Glenn Danzig to perform at the show tonight. And he's only doing the Misfits hits that we all know and love. He's got some of Heavy Cream backing him up. Devil locks.

EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD

A couple weeks ago, TV Ghost rolled through town and shattered dreams down at Betty's. We weren't there [We were out of town, otherwise we totally would've been there] but they boys passed along a little tape to our best bud Nathan. He then mentioned it to us and we both feel like it'd be a real shame to let this tape go without mention here. The cassette [out on Dry Well Records] features a few tracks from Argentina's Eel Life Cycle [we're not totally convinced on the Argentina thing...] and it's some of the best stuff we've heard in a long time. Like really though. It's really really good. Here's what they had to say about it over at Offensive Blogging [One of our favorite new sites]:

Hello favorites, we are super swamped with things today and there are only so many of us that can write on here so... yeah. But! We just wanted to let you know about some things coming up that we'll write more about in the next day or so:

NATURAL CHILD, who just returned from a great tour, are having their 7" release party tomorrow night at Glenn Danzig's House with 3-4 bands that have never played shows before. But that doesn't mean you won't recognize the people in the bands. Well, you might not... because some of them will be in costumes. It's only $5 and you get a free copy of the 7" when you walk in!
CMJ Festival was super rad and wore us out real bad. But we'd do it again in a second and we've got pages and pages of notes documenting the whole trip that we'll put up later. No matter how legible they are.
Our #1 mami Bekah Cope has been working on some special Halloween pictures for you guys, so get ready!

It seems like everyone is pinching the soggy cheeks of the Underwater Peoples crew [Home to Real Estate, Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, Ducktails, Julian Lynch, etc.] these days. Shit, even those Washington Post babies are in on it. And, now we are too. I mean, we've been fans for a while now and brought Real Estate to town after SXSW last year and had a ball; but now the same guys are making great music as Ducktails and Bleeker's Freaks and blowing everyone's brains out. They're floating across the country this month and might maybe be hitting Nashy on their way home [We're working on it, alright!?] So check them out and pick up their records. Our favorite Atlanta bad boys are coming back to town tomorrow night at Mercy Lounge and we can't think of a better way to get ready for the Halloween weekend. The last time they rolled through town was for the Those Darlins record release party, and if you were there then you know how rowdy it got. Expect nothing less this time around. They just wrapped up a few stints at CMJ and seem primed to play a few more stateside dates before jumping overseas. So, tonight the Knights In Satan's Service are gracing the stage at The Sommet. We feel kinda like these guys because we're ticketless on the day of the show. Not because it's sold out or anything, we just can't scrape up enough ghetty green to get ourselves into the party [It's a sad life when you can't find $20 for a KISS ticket] The alternate plan is that we go out tonight and find a couple of stellas and convert them. I mean, that kind of embodies the ideals of KISS to a tee, don't you think? Yeah.

What a shame. I know we're a little late on this, but I wasn't able to say anything about it from the road, so yeah. The babies never made their way to Nashville, but we caught them oodles of times at SXSW last year. They were even nice enough to sneak us into one of their shows a couple years ago [Thanks again, bebes] We know what most people think when they hear "girl punk" but Mika Miko are solid all-around. I'm sure this isn't the last we'll hear from the girls. I hope. Anyways, you can pick up their goodies from PPM or our favorite LA shop Ooga Booga. We really recommend it.

It's hard for us [or anyone else] to talk about anything other than JtB right now, but two albums we've been super stoked for are about to rise from the swamps of Florida: Jacuzzi Boys' No Seasons [out tomorrow on Florida's Dying] and TeePee's debut LP [available now on Senzei]

We've talked about Jacuzzi Boys a ton around here, so, if you've been paying attention, you're already aware of the babies' ability to infiltrate your brainwaves and stay there for days. They've put out a million 7"s in the past year or so, but none of the singles found their way onto No Seasons [except for "Island Ave"] Which means there are 11 new killer tracks that you probably haven't heard. Probably. That photo up there is the artwork [Say what you will, the record's tight] And don't be too surprised if we say that Gabriel and the boys will be rolling through town sometime soon...... We blagged about TeePee a while ago when we did that big Florida post [The good days. Amiright??] But he just released his debut LP, Morals, on Senzei Records and it's great for this time of year. It's hauntingly catchy with synthy-bits and drum machines and sad songs. I mean, what else would you want to listen to on a rainy Halloween? We're total supporters of the DIY aesthetic around here, so we were stoked to learn that the whole record was recorderd/mixed/made by TeePee along with the artwork and inserts and released on his label. Talk about work ethic. Only 500 copies of the LP were pressed, so get on it here.

They were my first concert, I remember my stepmother driving me to the Starwood when I was the tender age of last year. ZO2 opened, followed by pre-Rock of Love Poison. KISS was amazing, and the drunk dude sitting next to me kept on showing me his new pilot's liscense. He said he didn't have to drive anymore, so he gave me his Florida learner's permit so I could buy beer when I turn fourteen. One time I was in Brooklyn and I saw Monotonix at the Siren Music Festival and it was probably one of the more crazy shows I've been too, but the whole time I thought how much better they would be in a club. Sure, it's great for bands and festivals make for great photo-ops, but big crowds like the one at Siren kinda kill the concert experience for me. Especially when we saw them a couple years ago at Springwater and they blew our guts out. Plus their guitarist kept on elbowing me in the face at Siren. The last time they rolled through our fair city was no exception to the havoc their known for causing. They split a bill with hometown heros Silver Jews [Dave Berman, if you read this, please know that you mean more to me than you'll ever know. Never know.] You remember that show. These Hoosier-daddys [Get it? They're from Indiana] are wrapping up their recent tour with a stop here in our fair city at Betty's on Friday night. It's been a pretty impressive tour, too. They recently played both Pop Montreal and the WFMU Fest and have been playing shows with Wizzard Sleeve, FNU Ronnies, Thee Oh Sees, and Teenage Jesus & The Jerks. We've heard they've been blowing 'em all out of the water. Their debut LP, Cold Fish, came out in August on In The Red and it rules like most everything that they put out. Oh, and the show on Friday is with our favorite party-boaters Dude Cruz and Frosty. We can't really think of a better Friday night.... unless there's another Infinity Cat night.

A couple years ago our buddy Nathan Vasquez showed us this really rad band from San Diego and we've been listening to them non-stop since then. Christmas Island are a two piece [but Chris steps in for the live band] that make some great jangly beach jams. But don't be tricked, Brian's words could break your little heart. We were lucky enough to finally catch them this past SXSW since they rarely ever leave the West Coast. We're working on fixing that though. They've put out a couple of 7"s, most recently the "Nineteen" single on Captured Tracks and their debut full-length, Blackout Summer, just came out on In The Red. And is that not the best band-logo ever?

WE FUN is going to be showing at The Belcourt tonight at 7:00. We caught the flick back last winter at The Belcourt really late one night at the first screening of the movie [we don't really know how we ended up there, it was pretty much like 3 people and the dudes who made it] They've shown it a few other times at a few other places [including Halcyon Bike Shop] But a few weeks before we started this blog back in July, our good buddy BJ [Benjamin Jay Womack / Bobby Ubangi] passed away, and there was never really a good chance for us to say anything about it until now. BJay's in this movie a million times, and how could he not be? It's a movie about the Atlanta music scene and no one was as much a part of that as Bobby was. He was one of the original members of Carbonas and he was in Gaye Blades, The Lids, The Soft Spots, and his own solo band. There's a lot of Bobby in the blood of Atlanta, trust us; but BJ was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer that then spread to his brain, liver, and pretty much everywhere else and at the age of 34 it got to him. We miss you buddy, and we'll be wearing you proud to the movie tonight. Watching you read from Moby Dick is going to be tough.

WRIGHT'S JAMBULIYEAH FEST

Eric Wright's new project featuring Nathan Vasquez and Reid Barber. WILDDD. I mean, these guys are the same babes from Deluxin', No Compassion, and Reid & Wright so you know it's gonna be pretty good.

CY [BARKLEY]

The new project from EMP's Cy Barkley featuring Cannomen/Kintaro's Josh Shearon on bass and Kintaro/Natural Child's Zach Martin on drums. Cy and the boys bash out some real gnarly early-80s garage punk. Think Jay Reatard / Marked Men / Carbonas type of stuff. In other words, it's the kind of thing you want to listen to/see.

CANNOMEN

The punky brewster dude supergroup that we've talked plenty about. Comprised of members of Life Trap, Murdock, Kintaro, and Fantastic Butt. Loud and fast, spliffs and riffs to the max. They just put out their Demo Vol. 2, so be sure to snag a copy at the show.

DENNEY & THE JETS

The last time we saw Denney & his Jets all we could think was, "This is the music Nashville wishes it was known for." Really, some of the most sincere songwriting that you'll find during Next Big Nashville [or anywhere, for that matter]

Daniel's got a newly revamped lineup that we talked about last week and his tunes are sounding better than ever. Talk about hard working dudes.... Daniel just put out his own zine, is working on a new 7", is playing Oct. 5th with Dan Deacon and Oct. 6th in St. Louis with JEFF and Screaming Females.

NATURAL CHILD

Imagine if The Rolling Stones and The Beatles had a baby who loved punk rock but couldn't ever shake mom and dad's influence. We think that would sound something close to Natural Child. We talk about these guys pretty regularly and for good reason: they rock and roll. They've got a 7" coming out soon on Infinity Cat [more about that later though]

HEAVY CREAM

Our favorite mondo-babes will be surfing the magma 'til the break of dawn, and we'll all be surfing right along with them. We know they've been working out some new tunes, so maybe they'll treat our little ears at the show. If you haven't scooped up their 7", you should definitely get on that soon because they're going fast.

We're five days deep into October and it's already been a blast [Even though the weather dudes were totally wrong about Sunday. A 20% chance of rain!? It rained all day! COME ON!] But October is so great because that's when Tennessee gets its Fall. We always feel like Tennessee Fall's only last a week or two, so it's very important that we all enjoy this time to the max. Our buddy Maggie Lee put together a soundtrack for your Fall this year and our VICE buddies posted it up the other day. It features jams from Tough Knuckles, Sic Alps, Thrones and our favorite Kate Bush song/video.

Next Big Nashville is going to wear us out. But, ya know, there's no time to lose. This Sunday we're going to try and recover from the night before by non-stop partying. Isn't that the best way to put off recovery? By just continuing to party through the pain? Yeah, we thought so. We know you babies want to join in so here's the plan: Atlanta's Coathangers are playing at Little Hamilton. The Coathangers, a four-piece girl troupe, sound like a revamped riot grrrl garage-y synth punk band with a little bit if UK post-punk garbage. They've put out a couple 7"s and an LP with Suicide Squeeze and Rob's House. We feel like we should make some sort of Bikini Kill reference, and there you go. They're playing with Heavy Cream, Natural Child, and Wright's Jambliyeah Fest [they'll be rocking straight from the Infinity Cat Showcase the night before] Here's a weird video of the babes on LA Ink....

So there was this So-Cal San Diego group who played some real old-school-y rock and roll jams [Think if Velvet Underground and Modern Lovers adopted a kid: it's not related by blood so it doesn't have the grandeur that comes with that, but it was still raised on the goods] and they called themselves The Muslims. Then they got to be recognized in the primetime and started to catch a lot of guff for their name. So they changed it to The Soft Pack. Same tunes, different name. They're playing The End tomorrow night and we highly suggest going and checking it out. Here's the video of their song "Extinction" and a couple mp3s for you to pocket.

One of our fave new babes, Don't Bless Her [formerly of Brooklyn Y'all], posted this portrait she drew of Jemina Pearl that's going to be on her t-shirts soon. We think that would make a pretty rad shirt. And looking at the portrait got us stoked for our buddies to be back in town. It's been a good long while since we've seen Max flailing around on bass and we've only over seen John play guitar with Rain a couple times, so we are definitely pretty psyched to see how the new band goes. They're playing at Exit/In on Saturday, hopefully we'll find some time to pry ourselves away from the mondo-tasty Infinity Cat Showcase at The End and go check it out.

Man, we just got back from The 5 Spot. We weren't even planning on going out tonight, but, you know, sometimes it just happens. We decided to check it out when we heard that Heavy Cream had jumped back on the bill and were treated to great sets from both Kintaro and Heavy Cream. Heavy Cream kept it real cool. Then the JEFF boys took the stage [along with Wez on bass] They played a quick Heavy Cream cover [Lava Lamp] and then played "I'm a Freek" If that wasn't treat enough, Wez and Jake decided to grace us with their latest band, SHREDDERS. It ruled. The babies in that video up there would've loved to have been at this show.

Daniel Pujol is one busy dude. Between touring, writing, and grad school, we don't see how he has time to eat or sleep. He recently just put out his new zine, Rich Dick's Almanac, and it's pretty groovy. If you've read METAMOTORSPEEWAY: The Bristol Sessions [which you can pick up here] then you'll have an idea of the sorts of things that Daniel writes about. This new zine though, is supposed to be about "if Benjamin Franklin's Wario centrally planned an economy." One of the great things about Daniel's latest zine is that it's free! You can just send him an e-mail at danielsdreamdepo[at]gmail[dot]com and he'll send you a PDF version. What a babe, right?

Daniel also brought to our attention that the Richmond Zine Fest is right around the corner! It takes place this year on November 6th and 7th at Richmond's Gallery 5 [they also do some shows there] We'd describe to you what a zine fest is like, but it's pretty self explanitory: trading zines, selling zines, reading zines, zine-ing zines. If you've got the chance, definitely go check it out.

We're not exactly satisfied with Wiki's definition of garage-rock [not at all really] but we are definitely on board with this guy's idea of grunge...

Now that it's Fall and not a sloppy mess outside, we've been paying a lot more attention to the folkier section of our music collections. Mostly Dylan and Harlan Howard, but also a good bit of this guy. Kurt's been putting out records for a couple years now with labels like Mexican Summer, Woodsist, and Richie Records [they're kind of hard to come by on vinyl these days, but you might get lucky here] And just about everything he's done so far [with The Violators or without] has been pretty golden. It's something to definitely look into this week with the weather being how it is. There's just something about psychadelic-folk-rock and cold breezes that really get our lady wet. Kurt's got a new album, Childish Prodigy, coming out next week on Matador. You can stream the entire thing here.

Oh man, we thought we'd lost these guys for good last summer when they were playing their "final shows" and Max and John up and left for god knows what. Thank Moses that Deluxin' is back in action once again with a new lineup [featuring Sean from Gnarwhal and Glenn from Cole's cloning lab, just kidding Glenn and Cole] They were supposed to play at Willy's house show a little while back, but things were ended a bit too abruptly for everyone to get their sets in. Ya know, one of the best things about living in Nashville is Grimey's. There are few cities in the nation that do as swell a job as these babies do. I mean, they give you the best free all-ages instores ever, will order you any record you need, are the nicest people ever, and they prescribe to the ideals of beer:30. Oh, and every once in a while they do these huge party sales that are the best days of the year. Like the one coming up this weekend on October 3rd. They're calling it Rocktoberfst this year and it looks like it's going to be a ball as usual. The festivities start when the gates open at 10AM, so get there early to pick up all the $1 LPs and everything else they've got to offer [Like some Yazoo and Jimmy Carl's BBQ] The music starts at Noon and goes until the end of the day. RAY CHARLES' EYES

Willy T once again gave us a show to remember, but we almost missed it. Forever Young’s secret crush was having a birthday party over on music row; the thing was supposed to be a surprise, but somebody spilled the beans. We were too late for Marj! which was totally lame, but luckily we got the tape to tide us over [and a potential belated review sometime in the future] JEFF was amazing as always: Jamin kept the pace, Jake was on top of the amp, and Wes from Natural Child broke the guitar for a second and a full bottle of King Cobra forever. It took a minute for the crowd to get in the mood, but after old-school favorite "Doo It" people finally started moving. Chain and the Gang was something else. Little Hammy turned into a punk rock r/b revival with mister Chain as the reverend, preaching about sex, money, and who really shot JFK.

This post isn’t very well written, but bear with us. We're a little stoned from second hand smoke and super tired from the night before. Hope everybody had an awesome Shabbat, you know we did.

MMAMMPHIS?

Seeing as it's Goner weekend in Memphis and we're not there anymore, we've decided to watch our favorite Memphis film, Mystery Train. It's a Jim Jarmusch film dealing with three different stories all centered around Elvis somehow. The flick features cameos from Steve Buscemi and fave babe Jay Hawkins. The movie's a little hard to find, but it's definitely worth the effort. Just check out the trailer.

BEN & CY FEST [In Pictures]

The first annual Ben & Cy Fest [We say annual because we really hope this becomes a yearly thing] was a total success! Nashville hasn't been treated to a show like that in quite a while: four great touring bands plus 2 awesome locals and for only $5? You're nuts if you missed out. Unless you have a good excuse, like you had swine flu or something. Anyways, here are some photos from ND photog Bekah Cope.

MANTLES

Mantles opened up the night perfectly with their balance of garage-y fuzz and pop gems. Sort of like if The Clean were from California and not New Zealand and they did a little more drugs back in the day. On top of that, they're probably one of the nicest bands we've ever met [same goes for Ty and the boys] They're debut self-titled record just came out a couple weeks ago on Siltbreeze. Go scoop it neow!

TY SEGALL

Without a doubt, Ty Segall [pronounced like sea-gull, no relation to Steven Seagal] was the highlight of the show. For us atleast. We've been blasting Horn the Unicorn and Ty Segall for a while now, so it was great to finally get to see him do his thing in the flesh and blood. Their bass player, Tim, was a real champ and played through his sickness like it was nothing. If Ty's coming to your town, definitely go out and see him. Just about everyone is working their asses off trying to make the kind of music that seems to come so effortlessly to him, and it probably seems that way because he's one of the best at it.

YUSSUF JERUSALEM

You know, not all bands can be the most fun thing to watch. If the pictures aren't evidence enough, let us just tell you that there was minimal movement coming out of these guys when they were playing. That's not to say that they weren't great though. They spilled out a few gems off of their new album, Heart Full of Sorrow, that really showed Nashville how a band can go from heavy black metal to poppy folk-rock in a matter of minutes.

WOVEN BONES

The last out-of-town band to play was Woven Bones from Austin, TX. They churned out a few super chuggy Jesus & Mary Chain-y jams and a great Gun Club cover [Sex Beat] and topped off their set with a Ramones cover [I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend] The singer, Andy, is pretty off-the-wall and knows how to really get at your guts, but the two other babes in the band are pretty rad guys. If you see them out on the street, you should yell things like "Hey! Aren't you WOVEN BONERS!?" They love that joke.

HEAVY CREAM

Man, we will never get tired of these babies. I mean, do we really need to write a review of their show? Fine. It ruled. They rocked. So primal. We love them. Go see them. Blah blah blah blah blah.... Seriously, Heavy Cream, you are the apple of Nashville's eye.

TURBO FRUITS

Turbo Fruits had the hard task of following 5 awesome bands, but they did it seamlessly. We've never seen a guitar player climb up into the rafters and then continue to play hanging upside down. Kudos to you, Jonas. As is usual with these guys, they slung their guitars like guns and left the crowd in their dust as they blasted through some new jams off Echo Kid and some old gems. They closed out their set with a cover of "Teenage Kicks" and all the sweaty babies got a little wetter.

We got word from an inside source that there might maybe be a bootleg cassette in the near future of the show. If their is, you better believe we'll talk about it. And you better believe it'll be worth getting.

Hey fellas, we JUST got back from Memphis and are super tired. Like, really really tired. Drove all day yesterday, saw some shows [JEFF, Woven Bones, Cococoma, Fresh & Onlys, Ty Segall, Reatards] ate some really bad pizza, drank some BooKoo, and partied at the pool. We promise that tomorrow we'll have some good things for all you babies to read. And to look at. Like the photos from Ben & Cy Fest. Until then, we're going to catch a good night's sleep. BUSY BUGGY

We're still just putting around Glenn Danzig's getting all the final touches taken care of. Meaning: we don't really have a lot of time to be blag-a-blagging today. Sorry. But! We would like to share two of our favorite bands with you...

DUNEBUGGY

Dunebuggy is the mindchild of Ryan Garbes [Wet Hair] and Taterbug. It might be the most fun thing we've found to listen to in a while. Imagine if two old ghosts got a hold of some drums and a sweet keyboard. Now imagine that they love to cover classics like "Wild Thing" and "Louie Louie" but they don't really know how so they just mash it all together. Now you've got it! They've got a cassette out on Night People, which you can pick up right here. It's really great. Don't expect a Dunebuggy tour anytime soon, or for them to come through Nashville. Just pick up the cassette and wishful think your way to sleep.

FIRST BASE

Canada, sometimes you are so good to us. First Base are from Toronto, but they sound like they're from forever ago. When the music was REAL! That's just a joke. Kind of. That picture up there is the artwork from the I've Got A Girl 7" which came out a while ago on Pizza Party Records. Personal & The Pizzas even covered one of their songs on their Brass Knuckles 7". Shit man, someone get us to a beach party right now. Or after tonight.
